WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI – The La Crosse Loggers continued their perfect road trip and won their sixth consecutive game on Tuesday night by defeating the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters 6-3 at Wittier Field in Wisconsin Rapids.
The Lumbermen strung together three consecutive singles in the second inning, followed by a RBI ground out to jump out to a 2-0 lead. The host Rafters answered right back though with a pair of runs in the home half of the second to knot the score at two.
Both teams would trade runs in the third, keeping the score tied at three after three innings of play. But Loggers starter Zach Lewis (Wichita State) would settle in after that and keep the Rafters' bats silent for the next four innings.
In the meantime, the Loggers jumped on top in the fifth thanks to a solo home run off the bat of Grant Fennell (Nevada), his first of the season. La Crosse then tacked on another run in the seventh thanks to an RBI double from Brock Lundquist (Long Beach State) and another run in ninth thanks to another RBI double, this one compliments of Will Savage (Columbia).
After Lewis went seven strong innings, he turned it over to the bullpen and Jordan Jess (Minnesota) pitched a scoreless eighth followed by Ty Provencher (Long Beach State) who tossed a scoreless ninth to record to record his third save of the season.
The Loggers pounded out 13 hits on the night, led by Jordan Zimmerman (Michigan State) who went 3-5 with two runs scored. Fennell and Jacob Boston (Mesa CC) also collected two hits apiece with Fennell also driving in a pair.
With the victory, the Loggers improved to 9-6 on the season. The Loggers and Rafters will complete this current two-game set on Wednesday night again at Wittier Field at 7:05 p.m. Air time on the Logger Radio Network is set for 6:30 p.m.
