La Crosse, Wisc. – The Loggers fell to the last place Kalazmazoo Growlers tonight 3-1. Kevin Flemer (Oregon State) pitched well, but took his first loss of the season. Two errors by Loggers infielders were the difference in the score tonight.
Kalamazoo jumped on the board in the 1st inning when a leadoff walk by Angelo Armenta (USC) that scored on a throwing error by Zander Clarke (UCLA).
Chris Baker (Washington) singled to lead off the 4th. He moved to third on a Ryan Kirby (San Diego) hit. Baker tied up the game when Ben Morgan (UW-La Crosse) grounded into a double play.
Two more scored for the Growlers in the 5th. Bryce Adams (LSU) reached on an error by Jordan Pearce (Nevada). A bad bounce in right field turned a routine single into a RBI triple. Drew Farmer (Western Michigan) drove in the run with a one-out single.
Both starting pitchers tonight held the opposing offenses at bay. Alex Kuisal (Academy of Art) pitch 5.2 innings, giving up a lone run on seven hits. Kevin Flemer (Oregon State) pitched 6.0 innings for the Loggers, giving up one earned run, 3 total. He also struck out four Growlers.
Mason McCoy (Iowa) doubled in the 5th inning to put him within one run of tying the Northwoods League single season hits record held by Luis Rivera of Waterloo in 1995.
Kalamazoo added some insurance runs in the 9th, loading the bases off Neil Lang (Grossmont CC) on a double and two walks. Angelo Armenta cleared the bases with a double to left-center. The Loggers could not make up the deficit as they fell 6-1 to the Growlers.
The Loggers head out east to play their last road series of the season against the Green Bay Bullfrogs. The last five games of the season come against South Division playoff teams, making them crucial if La Crosse hopes to host a playoff game next week.
