La Crosse, Wisc.- The La Crosse Loggers glide by the Eau Claire Express 8-1 tonight at Copeland Park. The reigning Northwoods League MVP, Mason McCoy, made his first start of the season. He went 3-for-5, including hits in his first two at-bats.
Nelson Martz (Lewis and Clark) and Brody Rodning (Mankato) flew through each other’s lineups in the three innings. Mason McCoy and Express second baseman Sam Hurt (Kent State) made great defensive plays to keep the offenses in check.
The Loggers got to Rodning in the 4th. The first seven Loggers reached base to start the inning. David Jacob (Quincy) and Casey Danley (Illinois Central) led off with back-to-back singles. Kevin Collard’s (San Diego) doubled scored Jacob to put the first run of the ball game on the scoreboard. Luke Farley (Iowa) brought in Danley on the next play. Luis Trevino (Houston) doubled to bring in two more. McCoy brought in one of his own on a groundout, making the score 5-0 La Crosse.
Martz threw 6.2 scoreless innings, giving up six hits and striking out two hitters.
Kevin Collard extended the Logger lead to eight with a home run with two on and no outs in the 7th inning. The Express scored a run in the 8th on a passed ball but Mark Nowaczewski (Nevada) was able to secure the win for the Loggers.
Mason McCoy set a Loggers team single game record with two triples on the night.
La Crosse gets back on the winning side to move to 3-4. Eau Claire falls to 4-3. The two teams match up at Carson Park in Eau Claire tomorrow night at 6:05.
