Waterloo, IA – The La Crosse Loggers won their fifth consecutive game on Friday night, beating the Waterloo Bucks by a score of 5-2 in front of 1,002 fans on a hot summer night.

The Lumbermen jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the opening frame after Braiden Ward (Washington) doubled to leadoff the game, coming around to score on a sacrifice fly from Mike Rothenberg (Duke).

La Crosse added a run in the second inning on an error by the third baseman that plated Donta Williams (Arizona) who reached on a base hit to start the inning. In the third, La Crosse extended its lead to 3-0 as Bryce Blaum (Texas A&M) scored an unearned run on a sacrifice fly by Austin Murr (DMACC).

With the score 3-1 in the fifth inning, Korey Lee (Cal) belted his fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot that gave the Loggers a 5-1 lead.

That was all that Loggers starting pitcher Bill Chillari (Duke) needed on Friday night, as he picked up his second victory of the season. Chillari was outstanding once again, going 7.2 strong innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out five. Chillari lowered his season ERA to 2.70 with his third consecutive outing allowing two or fewer earned runs.

Trent Sidwell (Illinois-Springfield) slammed the door out of the Loggers bullpen, recording the final four outs to pick up his second save of the season. La Crosse was led offensively by Lee’s three-hit night, while Ward extended his consecutive on-base streak to 28 games.

The Loggers return home for a big weekend series against the Willmar Stingers, with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 PM on Saturday evening. La Crosse (37-27 overall, 20-9 second half) sits just a half-game back of the Duluth Huskies for the second half division title with eight games remaining in the 2018 season.
