THUNDER BAY, Ontario — After dropping the first game of the day-night doubleheader 7-0, the La Crosse Loggers rebounded with an 8-5 win over the Thunder Bay Border Cats at Port Arthur Stadium on Wednesday evening. The Loggers move to 9-8 after the victory.
Cody Jefferis (San Diego) got things rolling offensively for La Crosse from his leadoff spot in the order, clearing the bases with a double in the second inning. Brady Allen and Brett Hawkins each added RBI doubles in the frame to give La Crosse an early 6-0 lead.
The Border Cats (4-13) responded with three runs in the fourth inning, but strong pitching performances by Jon Meyerring (Miami of Ohio) and Jared Freilich (Penn State) helped keep Thunder Bay at arm’s reach. Meyerring (1-0) allowed three hits and three runs over five innings, his longest outing of the season, to earn the win, while Freilich struck out four over four innings of relief to earn his third save of this season.
Jefferis finished 3-for-5 with four RBI to move his season average to .353, while Hawkins and Allen each added two doubles apiece for La Crosse. The Loggers finished with seven doubles in the contest.
La Crosse will wrap up its four-game series with Thunder Bay on Thursday, before a two-game set in Willmar beginning on Friday.
