Crawford Breaks Up No-No In 9th
(7/21/05)
The MoonDogs came into their match up on Thursday night, tied with their opponent the Thunder Bay Border Cats, for first place of the North Division. A win would push the ‘Dogs into first place and a 3-2 lead in the six game series. The MoonDogs could not take advantage of Thunder Bay’s control problems on the mound though as the MoonDogs walked ten times but were only able to knock one hit coming from Brandon Crawford in the ninth inning with two outs as the Border Cats strolled to a 7-0 win in Thunder Bay.
After scoring one run in the second inning, the Border Cats extended their lead in the third with two runs thanks to a one out double by Jeff Fontaine followed by a triple by JR Voyles. Voyles finished the contest with a game leading 3 RBI.
With score 5-0 going into the top of the 7th inning, the MoonDogs threatened when they loaded the bases with one out for Crawford. Crawford then popped out to the third baseman, and All-Star Reid Fronk struck out as the Border Cats got out of the jam unharmed with the no hitter still intact.
The MoonDogs finally broke up the no hitter with two outs in the top of the ninth inning when Crawford doubled with one runner on to put base runners on second and third. Fronk then walked to load the bases for L.J. Mims who flew out to centerfield to end the game in a 7-0 defeat.
Reid Fronk was hitless in the game but was able to get on base as he walked a game leading three times. Crawford’s double was the only hit of the game for the MoonDogs as he went 1-3 on the night with one walk and a stolen base.
