Huskies "Squeeze" By MoonDogs
(7/23/05)
The MoonDogs made a stop in Duluth on Saturday to take on the Huskies for game-one of the two-game series. Both teams came into the contest tied for third in the North division with a 7-5 record and just two games behind the first place Thunder Bay Border Cats. The MoonDogs battled the Huskies hard taking a 1-1 score into the ninth inning. But the Huskies were able to manufacture a run in the bottom of the ninth when Brandon Bingham suicide squeezed with the bases loaded to score a run and win the game 2-1.
The Huskies scored first in the bottom of the second inning off an error from the MoonDogs to go up 1-0. The MoonDogs answered back though when L.J. Mims singled through the right side of the infield and Drew Davis followed with a double that brought Mims in for the 1-1 score.
Strong pitching and defense kept either team from scoring as Joey Haug relieved MoonDogs starting pitcher Brandon Thomson in the second inning and pitched 4.2 strong innings striking out six batters while allowing no runs.
The game was pushed into the bottom of the ninth inning with the score still 1-1. Kevin Regan had relieved Haug in the eighth and now looked to keep the Huskies off the board. But the Huskies loaded the bases on Regan with one out as Bingham stepped up to the plate. Bingham then preceded to lay down a bunt that went only a couple of feet away from home plate; however, it was just enough for the Huskies to score the winning run and defeat the MoonDogs 2-1.
Catcher Drew Davis led the MoonDogs on the offensive side going 2-4 with a double and one RBI. Brandon Crawford also had two hits on the night with a stolen base. Reid Fronk’s on base streak finally came to an end at 34 consecutive games of getting on base, dating all the way back to his first Northwoods League game on June 12th.
