Thunder Bay, Ont. – Thunder Bay overcame a late comeback from the MoonDogs, as they scored two runs in the bottom of the tenth inning to score a 3-2, 10 inning victory on Wednesday evening at Port Arthur Stadium.

The Border Cats (21-36, 12-11) took a 1-0 lead in the first and held in until the top of the ninth inning. Kyle Knudson (Minnesota) led off the inning for the Dogs (34-23, 11-13) by tying the game with one swing of the bat, dropping a solo home run at cavernous Port Arthur Stadium to tie the game at one.

After the Dogs held the Cats in the bottom of the inning, Brenden Webb (Palomar) led off with a walk and came all the way around on three wild pitches by Tim Combs (Eastern Michigan) to take a 2-1 lead.

The Border Cats trumped the comeback with one of their own in tenth off MoonDog reliever John Brebbia (Elon). Matty Johnson (Bellevue) doubled to start the inning and came around two batters later on a David Phillips (Ole Miss) double. After a walk and strikeout, AJ Schugel (Central Arizona) roped a single to score Phillips and give the Border Cats the come from behind victory.

Jimmy Patterson (Arizona State) was the only MoonDog with multiple hits, going 2-5. Phillips posted a 3-4 day with two runs and two of the three RBI for the Border Cats.

James Wise (Washington State) and Matt Valcarcel (St. John’s) both threw up numerous zeros on the scoreboard in their respective starts, as Wise went seven, striking out six and walking two. Valcarcel went six and allowed five hits and struck out four.

Brebbia took the loss for the Dogs, giving up two earned runs in one and two-thirds innings. Tyler Powell (Belmont Abbey) hurled two-thirds of an inning to pick up the win for the Cats.

The same two squads will play three more games in Thunder Bay, with game two starting tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. EST.
