Brainerd, MN – It took ten innings but the Mankato MoonDogs’ (7-4) five-game winning streak finally came to an end against the Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers (5-7) on Sunday afternoon by a final of 1-0.

The game was scoreless through nine innings as starters Ryan Demmin (Minnesota State-Mankato) and Kyle Teague (Oakland) went pitch for pitch. In fact when Demmin left the game with one out in the seventh, the Lunkers were still without a hit. Teague matched Demmin’s brilliance all afternoon, shutting out the MoonDogs allowing only three hits through seven innings of work.

When the bullpens took over, Brainerd finally began to find their offense. The Lunkers threatened in both the 8th and 9th innings but both times the MoonDogs’ defense answered the challenge. In the 8th inning center fielder Alex Glenn (USC) threw out a runner at home plate and in the 9th, a missed squeeze play allowed catcher Bobby Jacobs (Penn State) to tag out Doran Williams (Emporia State) sending the game to extra innings.

In the 10th inning the Lunkers finally broke through. After loading the bases with one out, Vince Bruno (California-Berkeley) lined a fastball into left field, giving the Lunkers a 1-0 victory.

The lone bright spot offensively for the MoonDogs was Jordan Steranka (Penn State) who accounted for all three of the MoonDogs hits in the game.

Despite the no decision, Demmin continued his mastery of the Northwoods League in 2010. In 19.2 innings, he has yet to give up a run, allowed seven hits, and has struck out a Northwoods League leading twenty-four batters.

The two teams will finish their three-game series Monday in Brainerd at 7:05 pm before the first scheduled off day of the season on Tuesday.
