Thunder Bay, Ontario- Zak Wasserman’s two-out, two-run single in the seventh inning propelled the Mankato MoonDogs to a 7-5 victory over the Thunder Bay Border Cats, Thursday evening at Port Arthur Stadium.

Jeff Rohrbach (St. Edwards) has been primarily used as a long reliever out of the bullpen this season, but due to several injuries in the starting rotation, Rohrbach made his first start of the summer for the MoonDogs. Rohrbach pitched effectively at times, but ran into trouble in the bottom of the sixth inning, giving up two runs, and was eventually taken out of the ball game trailing 4-3.

With the MoonDogs trailing heading into the top of the seventh, Zak Wasserman (Louisville) came to the plate with a pair of runners on base. Wasserman blasted a hard groundball into centerfield, knocking in both runners. The MoonDogs scored three runs in the inning, taking a 6-4 lead. The boys in black and orange would not look back, eventually winning 7-5.

Rohrbach earned a no-decision in his first start of the season, striking out four batters in 5 1/3 innings of work. Scotty Walker (UC-Davis) picked up his first win of the summer, pitching one inning in relief, allowing no runs on two hits.

The MoonDogs and Border Cats are back in action Wednesday night, with Tyler Niederklein (Nebraska) taking the mound looking for his third win of the season. The MoonDogs return home July 15th for a two game series against the Willmar Stingers. The MoonDogs’ suspended game against Willmar from June 14th will be made up starting at 6:05 on Friday with the regularly scheduled game beginning 30 minutes after the completion of the suspended game. Single game tickets are on sale at the MoonDogs office located at 1221 Caledonia Street. For more information visit our website at www.mankatomoondogs.com or call the MoonDogs office at 507-625-7047.
