(Mankato, MN)—After two rain outs suspended St. Cloud’s first two games, the MoonDogs (2-0) continued the trend as they rained on their parade in a 5-3 victory over the River Bats (0-1) Saturday night.
Even though the MoonDogs scored a run in the first inning, the River Bats came back in the bottom half of the inning to plate two runs of their own to take an early 2-1 lead after the first inning. The MoonDogs would regain the lead 3-2 after scoring a run in both the third and fourth inning. After the first inning, MoonDogs starter Pat Lenton (MSU-Mankato) shut-down the River Bats offense giving up just two runs on three hits, a walk and struck out three in five innings of work to pick up his first victory of the season.
In the eighth inning, the MoonDogs would score two insurance runs. The MoonDogs fifth and final run of the night came on an old fashion double steal of home plate that scored Kyle Knudson (Minnesota).
Four MoonDogs relievers would combine to pitch the last four innings, allowing just one run in the eighth inning. Erik Hamren (UC-Irvine) finished off the River Bats in the bottom of the ninth inning to pick up his first save of the season.
MoonDogs hitters Justin Milo (Vermont) finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and Wes Freie (Iowa) continued his hot hitting going 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
