Mankato, Minn. – Another draft, another big day for current and former MoonDogs players.

The Mankato MoonDogs had four players selected in the first five rounds of the 2010 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft. Michael Kvasnicka (Minnesota) was selected 33rd overall, as the first pick in the supplemental first round, by the Houston Astros. Kvasnicka was a MoonDog during the 2008 season.

Jacob Petricka (Indiana State) was selected in the second round, 63rd overall, by the Chicago White Sox. Petricka led Indiana State this season with seven wins, over 100 innings pitched and 113 strikeouts. Petricka spent the 2009 season in a MoonDogs jersey.

Current MoonDog Ben Heath (Penn State) was selected in the fifth round, 153rd overall, also by the Houston Astros. Heath hit .369 with the Nittany Lions and hit 19 home runs, while driving in 57 runs. Alex Burgos (State College of Florida) went ten picks later to the Detroit Tigers. Burgos, a key part of the MoonDog bullpen in 2009, won 13 of his 14 starts this spring and struck out 109 batters in 95 innings in leading SCF to the NJCAA World Series.

The action didn’t slow down, as Nick Bartolone (Chabot College) was selected by the Indians in the sixth round, as the 180th pick overall. Shortly thereafter, Jimmy Reyes (Elon) went to Texas in the seventh round, 226th overall, followed in the eighth round by Lance Ray (Kentucky) at pick 255 to the Texas Rangers, and Alan Oaks (Michigan) at pick 257 to the Minnesota Twins.

Kyle Knudson (Minnesota), a MoonDog in 2008 and 2009 went in the ninth round, as the 285th overall pick, to the Minnesota Twins. Knudson collected 74 hits for the Dogs over his two seasons, while driving in almost 40 runs. Garett Claypool (UCLA) a MoonDog in 2007, was selected in the 11th round by the Philadelphia Phillies, at pick number 351.

The Minnesota Twins selected their third MoonDog of the day when Clint Dempster (Nicholls State) went in the 16th round, as the 495th overall selection. The last MoonDog picked in the top 20 rounds was current Dog Jimmy Patterson (Arizona State), who was picked by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 18th round, 551st overall.
