Perfect Night for Smith
adminJordan Smith (St. Cloud State) had a perfect day at the plate on Thursday night going 5-for-5. Smith helped beat the Rochester Honkers by a score of 10-4 at Mayo Field in Rochester. The Willmar native scored three runs and had an RBI to go with. Smith is now leading the NWL in average at .436 and second in RBI with 25. Zeke DeVoss (Miami) also had a big night going 2-for-3 with three runs scored and four RBI for Duluth.
Enns Wins It for Express
adminThe Eau Claire Express and La Crosse Loggers were in a pitcher’s duel Thursday night in Eau Claire. Dietrich Enns (Central Michigan) came out with the win after throwing 8.0 innings while giving up six hits. Enns gave up one run while striking out seven and walking three. The Express starter now moves to 1-1 on the season with a 1.71 ERA. Tony Mueller (Winona State) was the tough luck loser giving up one earned over 6.0 innings. Enns earned first-team All-MAC honors and became the first Chippewa to win the MAC Freshman of the Year award this spring. The Frankfort, Ill., native went a perfect 7-0 pitching mostly out of the bullpen. His 2.12 ERA is currently the 14th-best figure in the country while his 5.16 hits per nine innings ranks third and his 9.71 strikeouts per nine innings 58th.
June Winds Down
adminAlexandria 4, Duluth 2 The Alexandria Beetles matched the two spot the Duluth Huskies put up in the eighth with their own two spot for the win. Eric Birch (Waldorf) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.
Riggins An RBI Machine
adminHarold Riggins (NC State) put on a show Wednesday night at the ‘Duck Pond’ in Madison. The first basemen helped the Mallards beat the Wisconsin Woodchucks 11-1. Riggins was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. Riggins hit his third home run of the season and also reached base on a hit-by-pitch. Riggins is currently hitting .370 in eleven games.
Olson Throws Another Complete Game
adminCharley Olson (Georgia State) was at it again Wednesday night on the mound. He threw a complete game against the Rochester Honkers while striking out four and only giving up one earned run. Olson moves to 3-2 on the season with 31 strikeouts in 38 innings pitched. He also has only walked seven batters in the 38 innings pitched.
Hot Bats Around the NWL
adminAlexandria 9, Duluth 1 It was the Sander Beck (Maryland) show Tuesday night at Knute Nelson Park. The Alexandria Beetle threw a gem by 8.0 innings while giving up no runs and only three hits. The Beetles put on a clinic at the plate as well with four Beetles having multiple hit nights.
Dittman Goes Deep…Twice
adminMatt Dittman (Illinois) had a huge day at the plate for the Rochester Honkers on Tuesday night. The first basemen helped the Honkers beat the Willmar Stingers 12-4. Dittman hit his sixth double of the season, but also hit his 2nd and 3rd home runs of the season. He ended the night 3-for-5 with three runs scored and six RBI. He is currently hitting .333 for the Honkers with 20 RBI in only 21 games played.
Massey Mows Down Rafters
adminTaylor Massey (Dallas Baptist) put on a show Tuesday night for the Waterloo Bucks. Massey improved his record to 3-0 with a complete game seven hitter. He currently has a 0.84 ERA in five games started. The lefty from Fort Worth, TX struck out six Wisconsin Rapids Rafters in a 15-0 blowout at Witter Field in Wisconsin.
