Opening Weekend Recap

Mock, Bewley Highlight Loggers Weekend

La Crosse, Wis. – The opening weekend of college baseball saw strong performances and collegiate debuts from a few incoming members of the La Crosse Loggers. The first games of the season were highlighted by outstanding relief pitching and the clutch hitting of San Diego’s Brhet Bewley.

Penn State reliever Eric Mock made two appearances over the weekend, dominating in both outings and picking up a pair of saves in the process. The right-handed sophomore entered in the ninth inning of game one for the Nittany Lions, promptly striking out the side in a 2-1 victory over Elon University. Mock followed with a three inning save in the final game of the series, a 3-2 victory to complete a weekend sweep for Penn State. Mock finished the weekend with seven punch outs in 4.0 innings of work, not allowing a hit.

A couple more standout performances out of the bullpen came from Liberty’s Garret Price and Sean Frontzak of Saint Louis University. Price made two appearances in Liberty’s series sweep of VCU, collecting two saves in 3.1 innings of work. The sophomore struck out an impressive eight batters, allowing just one run for the Flames. Frontzak picked up where he left off last season, making three shutout appearances out of the Billikens’ bullpen. The sidearm right-hander gave up just one hit in 2.0 innings of work at the Sunshine State Classic.

Incoming Loggers that had notable performances at the plate include catchers Korey Lee (California) and Shane McGuire (San Diego), infielder Brhet Bewley (San Diego), and newly signed outfielder Harrison Freed (Butler). Returning Logger Korey Lee went 3-for-11 with a double and two RBI for Cal, while Shane McGuire made his collegiate debut for San Diego and finished the weekend 3-for-9 with a pair of RBI.
