Rockford, Illinois. – The Northwoods League is deeply saddened to announce the untimely passing of esteemed umpire Conor McKenzie in a devastating car accident Sunday morning. The league and its entire community are reeling from this profound loss and offer their heartfelt condolences to Conor’s family, friends, and colleagues during this challenging time. Fortunately, the two other umpires traveling with Conor are currently in stable condition.
Conor McKenzie was an exceptional and highly regarded umpire, celebrated for his unwavering professionalism, unwavering dedication, and immense love for the game. He joined the Northwoods League in 2019 and swiftly became an indispensable member of the umpiring crew, leaving an indelible mark on players, coaches, and fans alike. Over the course of his tenure, Conor officiated close to 350 Northwoods League games, including every all-star game and postseason match throughout his four previous seasons.
“Conor was an exceptional umpire and an even better person,” said Northwoods League Chairman Dick Radatz, Jr. “His dedication to the game was unparalleled, and his loss is deeply felt throughout our league.”
Conor’s ardent passion for baseball shone brightly in every game he presided over. His comprehensive knowledge of the sport and unwavering integrity earned him the utmost respect and admiration from all those fortunate enough to collaborate with him. Conor’s infectious enthusiasm and positive demeanor created a lively and enjoyable atmosphere on the field.
“Conor was an amazing man with a heart of gold and a personality to match,” remarked Northwoods League Umpire Supervisor Larry Rose. “He had a special zest for life that’s unmatched. He left us today on his way to do what he loved doing more than anything, umpiring a baseball game which he was extraordinarily good at. The Northwoods League lost not just an umpire but a dear member of our family. He will be missed in many, many ways but never forgotten.”
To honor Conor’s memory, a moment of silence will be observed before tomorrow night’s games, providing players, coaches, and fans with an opportunity to pay their respects collectively.
