Express end home season on a down note

The Eau Claire Express concluded the home portion of the 2015 Northwoods League season today and did so in losing fashion as they fell 5-2 to the hands of the Duluth Huskies at Carson Park.

Duluth scored two in the second inning to grab an early lead they would never let go of off Express starter Trent Shelton. Shelton went six solid innings allowing eight hits and the two runs, however only one of them was earned.

Shelton also struck out six while walking just one in his second start of the season.

Eau Claire would close the gap with a run in the fifth inning off a sacrifice fly from right fielder Tyler Adkison.

Two innings later though Duluth would get the big hit either team needed with a three run home run off of Express reliever Miles Nablo.

“Big hits win big games,” said Express centerfielder Brady Burzynski. “I feel like they just came through with that home run, they got the big hit and we didn’t.”

The Express would come up with one more run in the ninth inning but the comeback fell short as they ended the home season with a loss.

“Give them credit,” said Express Field Manager Dale Varsho. “They made the plays, they pitched well we just didn’t execute.”

Daulton Varsho had a solid night at the plate going 2-3 with two walks, just like it went all season Varsho said it is all about timing.

“Not getting those big hits at the right times,” said Varsho. “It’s been the theme of the season.”

The Express fall to 28-29 overall including 15-18 in the second half.

“It’s always a sad day leaving Carson Park,” said Varsho. “Four games to go on the road now and hopefully next year when we’re back here we’ll be playing better.”

The Express continue the season with one more four game road trip. They start it off tomorrow in Alexandria to take on the Blue Anchors at 7:05 p.m. Listen to all home and away Express games live on Mix 98.1 radio and online.
