North Division

St. Cloud (48-23)

Pitching Guides Rox to Playoffs

After finishing in second place in the North Division by a half-game in the first-half standings, St. Cloud punched its ticket to the playoffs by taking the second-half crown, which was also by a half-game.

St. Cloud’s path to the postseason was guided by its pitching staff. The Rox rank among the top teams in the league in most major categories. Rox pitchers combined for a 3.34 earned run average throughout the season, which is good for the second best in the league. St. Cloud pitching ranks third by limiting opponents to a .241 batting average, and the Rox have shown the ability to shut opposing hitters down with a league-leading nine shutouts. Collin Strall (Louisiana State University) has been one of the most reliable relievers in the entire league with 25 appearances and 58 2/3 innings, and his 1.53 ERA ranks second among qualifying pitchers. Strall and Brian Glowicki (University of Minnesota) lead the team with 10 saves each. Starter Carlo Graffeo (Southeastern Louisiana) leads the team in ERA with a 2.04 mark in nine appearances, including seven starts and a 3-0 record. Lefthander Dan Metzdorf (Boston College) is not far behind with a 2.09 ERA and a record of 4-1.

St. Cloud certainly has some capable hitters throughout its lineup. Though power is not the Rox strong suit with just 30 home runs as a team, they do rank seventh in the league with in runs scored with 399. Shortstop Brett Pope (Western Carolina University) finished the regular season with a .331 batting average to lead the team. Ricky Ramirez (McNeese State) is hitting .298 with a team-high 42 RBI, while Denis Karas (Cal Berkeley) is tied for the team lead with five home runs.

St. Cloud will match up with Willmar on Monday night at 7:05 at home in the divisional semifinal. The Rox and Stingers played each other eight times in the regular season, and St. Cloud won five of the games.

Mankato (46-26)

Consistent performance fuels MoonDogs to postseason play

The Mankato MoonDogs finished third in the first-half standings and followed that up with a second-place performance in the second half for the second best overall record in the North Division.

The MoonDogs finished with the fourth-best ERA as a team in 2016 at 3.54. Starting pitcher Ricky Digrugilliers (Western Illinois) has been the go-to pitcher for Mankato with a 2.31 ERA and finished the regular season with a 6-3 record in 10 starts. Brian Gadsby (UCLA) had five saves in the regular season with a 2.38 ERA in 20 appearances. Brick Paskiewicz (Grand Canyon) also saved five games and had a 1.59 ERA in 11 games.

Mankato boasts some of the best hitters in the Northwoods League, as the MoonDogs rank third in batting average at .279. Infielder David Metzgar (CSU Bakersfield) is third in the league in batting average at .356, while outfielder Jake Shepski (Notre Dame) is fourth in the league with a batting average of .333. Shepski connected on 11 homers, drove in 55 runs and scored 52 times, all of which led the team, and also proved to have a good eye at the plate with 56 walks, which ranks second in the Northwoods League.

Mankato will play Eau Claire on the road on Monday night at 6:35. The two squared off eight times in the regular season, and the MoonDogs appeared to have their number, as they beat the Express in seven of their eight matchups.

Eau Claire (45-27)

Big First Half Earns Eau Claire a Playoff Spot

Eau Claire opened the season with a first-half championship, squeaking by St. Cloud by a half-game. The Express finished in fifth place in the second half for a third-place finish overall.

Eau Claire had a solid year on the mound, finishing the regular season with a 3.85 ERA, which ranks fifth in the Northwoods League. Righthander Caleb Boushley (UW-La Crosse) has been a consistent starter for the Express. In 10 starts, Boushley recorded an 8-2 record with a 2.95 ERA, and in 61 innings of work, he walked just seven batters. In six starts, Austin Schulfer (Milwaukee) finished the regular season with a 1.77 ERA and struck out 50 batters in 40 2/3 innings pitched. Schulfer has recorded three double-digit strikeout performances this season. Eau Claire has a solid option at the back end of its bullpen with righthander Christian Tripp (New Mexico), who had 11 saves, struck out 24 batters in 23 innings with an ERA of 2.34.

The Express scored 424 runs in the regular season, which ranks second in the Northwoods League. One big reason for the high run total is Eau Claire’s base running. The Express stole a season-high 123 bases, while getting caught 30 times. Eau Claire’s catcher Daulton Varsho (UW-Milwaukee) had an incredible breakout season for the Express. He finished the regular season with 15 home runs, which was second most in the Northwoods League behind only La Crosse’s Griffin Conine (Duke). Varsho’s 63 RBI also ranks second in the league, and he finished with a .321 batting average and 26 stolen bases. Outfielder Zach Ashford (Fresno State) hit .327, had 68 hits and stole 17 bases for the Express.

Eau Claire will host Mankato on Monday night at 6:35. In eight games, the Express lost to Mankato seven times as the two play again for a spot in the Divisional Championship round.

Willmar (41-31)

Batting brings Stingers into Playoffs

The Willmar Stingers squeaked into No. 4 spot in the playoffs. Willmar finished sixth in the first half of the season but placed third in the second half to earn a playoff bid.

Willmar brings a solid pitching staff into the postseason with a team ERA of 4.00, which is good for sixth in the Northwoods League. Left-handed starting pitcher Blake Stockert (North Dakota State) has been lights out in his time with the Stingers. Vranesic has appeared in 20 games in the 2016 regular season and struck out 26 batters in 26 1/3 innings with an ERA of 1.36 on the year.

The main reason the Stingers are in the playoffs is because of their offense. The team ranked first in batting average, slugging percentage and on base plus slugging percentage in the regular season. Up and down the lineup, Willmar’s batters are stacked, and it all starts with outfielder Danny Pardo (Montevallo). He is second in the Northwoods League with a batting average of .360. His 95 hits and 75 runs lead the league. Pardo also stole 27 bases on the season, which ranks third. Infielder Greg Lambert (Southern Illinois) hit .330 at the plate and finished with 93 hits, second only to Pardo. Lambert knocked out nine home runs and led the entire league with 66 runs batted in.

Willmar will play St. Cloud on the road on Monday night at 7:05. The teams appear to be fairly evenly matched, but St. Cloud won five of the eight games played between them.
