Eau Claire, Wis. – The Eau Claire Express today announced the signing of two catchers to their 2017 roster. University of California sophomore Tyrus Greene and freshman Robby Campillo of the University of New Mexico will join the Texas Orange and Black as new players to the Northwoods League. The roster now stands at four. The team will continue to announce player signings weekly until the beginning of the Northwoods League season.
Greene is originally from San Diego, Calif. where he attended St. Augustine High School. He was an All-Eastern selection both his junior and senior years there and batted .357 with six home runs, 69 runs batted in and 38 stolen bases during his career with the Saints. Greene should bring a lot of value to the Express in both the lineup and in the field according to Cal Assistant Coach Thomas Eager.
“Tyrus is a really solid defender that can throw and block,” Eager said. “Offensively, he has a short left-hand swing that plays to all fields.”
Campillo hails from Tucson, Ariz. and lettered four years for Salpointe Catholic High School. He was named an All-Southern Arizona All-Star as a junior after hitting .308 and driving in 17 runs. Campillo should add a lot defensively to the Express roster according to Assistant Coach Buddy Gouldsmith.
“Robby is a prototypical catch-and-throw guy,” Gouldsmith stated. “He has a great physique, and once he adds weight will have the body of a professional catcher. He’s a great kid with a tremendous work ethic and really competes.”
Express Field Manager Dale Varsho thinks both catchers will have a great impact on the pitching staff, which is key to competing in the Northwoods League.
“I’m expecting both Tyrus and Robby to control our pitching staff and bring a great work ethic and attitude to the ballpark the entire summer,” Varsho said. “They both come from programs and coaching staffs that I know and trust, which puts my mind at ease.”
The Express begin season number 13 in the Northwoods League on May 30 as they travel to Bismarck, N.D. for the inaugural series for the Bismark Larks. They continue to Willmar to take on the Stingers for a two-game set before opening their home schedule at Carson Park on Saturday, June 3 versus the Mankato MoonDogs.
