Eau Claire, WI – The Eau Claire Express (8-15) lost game one of the two game series with the Mankato MoonDogs (14-9). The pitching staff for the MoonDogs put on a show in front of their hometown crowd as they shut down the Express, winning the ballgame 6-0.
Starting pitcher Brett Newberg put on a clinic for Mankato as he threw a complete game and did not give up a run. The junior from Austin Peay only allowed three hits and one walk while striking out six. The three Express hits came from the top of the order as Spencer Myers (Notre Dame), Cody Milligan (Oklahoma State) and Scott Ogrin (Cal Poly) each had a single.
Trevor Olson (Xavier) got the start for the Express but would only work one inning, giving up four earned runs on five hits. Rece Dietrich (Duluth) entered and tossed five innings allowing one run on five hits. Jimmy Fouse (Dallas Baptist) pitched a scoreless 7th inning and Drew Hmielewski (Minnesota) gave up one run in the 8th inning.
The MoonDogs got on the board first thanks to a Zac Wiley 3 RBI double in the bottom of the first. RJ Teijeiro singled later in the inning to drive in Wiley. In the 5th inning, Jake Shepski singled and scored Josh Elvir. The final Mankato run would come in the bottom of the 8th on a Kyle Cuellar RBI single and Austin Bull crossed the plate.
Eau Claire finishes the short road trip tomorrow, Friday, June 22nd, in Mankato. They will then return home on Saturday, June 23rd for a 6:35 pm first pitch. The game is presented by Window World & A+ Insulation. The ZOOperstars will perform throughout the game, youth jerseys will be given away to fans! Nick Anderson and the Skinny Lovers will perform on the plaza prior to the game. Pregame band is presented by OakLeaf Clinics.
