Green Bay looks to punch ticket to Northwoods League Championship Wednesday night

Traverse City, Mich.- The Green Bay Rockers are set to take on the Traverse City Pit Spitters Wednesday night in the Northwoods League Great Lakes Championship Game, with first pitch from Turtle Creek Stadium set for 6:05 p.m. CT.

The Rockers will look to secure a spot in the Northwoods League Championship with a win Wednesday, after coming off a series sweep to the Madison Mallards in the sub-divisional round of the playoffs, with the two-game sweep being capped by a two-run walk-off homer from Kendal Ewell (Illinois-Chicago) Monday night at Capital Credit Union Park.

Ewell led the way with two homers in all Monday night, while Cooper Kelly (Kansas) tacked on an RBI double to hand the Rockers the 5-4 victory over the Mallards in front of a ruckus crowd in Ashwaubenon.

Sam Polk (Washington University-St Louis) added three hits himself Monday to round out the Rockers offense and was one of the two winning runs scored on Ewell’s walk-off bomb to right, helping secure the sub-divisional series sweep of Madison to start out the Rockers title run.

Three Green Bay pitchers threw Monday with Maddox Long (Harding University) throwing the first five innings, and Jacob Faulkner (Princeton) and Henry Chabot (Chapman) pitching the last four innings while giving up just one combined earned run to help keep Green Bay in the ballgame down the stretch.

As for the pitching matchup for the Great Lakes Championship, the Rockers will start Kyle Stoddard (Missouri Southern St) who in the regular season threw 16 times as this will also be his 10th start in all in 2023.

Stoddard also posts a 3.71 ERA with 58 strikeouts and just 21 walks allowed, with this appearance being his second at Turtle Creek Stadium after pitching in the Great Lakes All-Star Game back on July 25.

The Pit Spitters will start Josh Lanham (Lenoir-Rhyne University) who finished the regular season with a 2-1 record and a 5.79 ERA with 13 walks and 31 strikeouts recorded, with Wednesday’s game being his eighth total appearance on the season.

The winner of this game will play in the Northwoods League Championship Game against the St. Cloud Rox, with first pitch set for Friday at Joe Faber Field. The Rox recently defeated the La Crosse Loggers Monday night 9-8 to secure their spot in the title game.
