Green Bay defeats Wausau in ten inning affair
Ashwaubenon, Wis. – Green Bay held on to win game two of the series against the Woodchucks behind a three-run fifth inning. It was an extra inning RBI-knock by Dom Bello that plated the game-winning run in the tenth frame.
Wausau opened the scoring in the first inning with a heads-up baserunning play by Keagen Jerschele who scored on a groundout to put Wausau up 1-0. Green Bay then battled back in the third and fourth innings with RBI singles from Landon Schafer and Boone Kirst. Kirst had three hits in his first Northwoods League start.
The Rockers led 2-1 until Wausau tied the game on a wild pitch from Eddy Eveland. The righty threw the ball well for Green Bay, notching his sixth quality start. He gave up three runs on five hits.
The Rockers plated three runs in the fifth inning due to some miscues by the Woodchuck defense. Jirschele made an error and so did Caleb Karll that led to the Rockers 5-2 lead. The bottom of the Rockers order with Santiago Carilles and Dawson Schmidt were both right in the middle of the offensive action.
Wausau battled back slowly, scoring a run in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings. Two errors by Landon Schaefer at shortstop were instrumental in the Chuck’s late surge. The eighth inning, game-tying run came courtesy of Ryan Chase who grounded a single through the left side with the infield in. It was a brand new game, knotted up at five.
In the tenth, Green Bay had their first two batters quickly retired without moving the ghost runner over before Bello pulled through. He lined his second knock of the evening into left-center field to give the Rockers a 6-5 lead.
Zach Tenn was masterful yet again. He threw five innings while only allowing one earned run. He got the win as he shut down the Woodchucks in the bottom half. Max Soliz was the final out and he popped up to right field with the game on the line.
The Rockers now are 2.5 games back from first place with four contests to go. A series with Wisconsin Rapids and a series with the Mallards remain for Green Bay.
