(Rochester, Minn)— The Rochester Honkers Baseball Club announced today that Matt Kent, a left-handed pitcher from Texas A&M will return this summer. The 2013 Rochester Honkers Pitcher of the Year will return for his third summer with the team.
Kent, a 6-foot, 175-pound redshirt sophomore, is currently 2-0 with a 1.46 ERA. He’s made six total appearances, two of which are starts, pitching 12.1 innings, allowing only 2 runs on 11 hits and striking out 13. Batters are hitting only .250 against him.
Last summer for the Honkers, the Waco, Texas native went 5-3 with a 2.50 ERA. He started 11 of 12 total games, pitching 72.0 innings and leading the squad with 66 strikeouts. He was named a mid-season North Division All-Star and also a 2013 Northwoods League All-Star.
As a redshirt freshman, Kent earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors once, and finished his season 2-3 with a 4.17 ERA. He logged 36.2 innings, allowing 43 hits and striking out 21. That summer for Rochester, Kent went 3-6 with a 3.43 ERA, and struck out 50 in 78.2 innings.
The Rochester Honkers 21st season begins on May 27th when the Waterloo Bucks prance into Mayo Field for a 7:05pm first pitch. The Honkers will play 72 games in 2014 (36 home, 36 away).
