Ricky Sanchez homers twice to down the Honkers in Alexandria

(Rochester, Minn.)– In the Honkers’ final game of 2014, they were defeated in Alexandria, 9-5, to the Blue Anchors.

Blue Anchors catcher Ricky Sanchez (Notre Dame) hit a solo homer in the bottom of the second off of Honkers starter Will Bamesberger (Creighton). He’d come back to haunt the Honkers later.

Ryne Roper (Illinois) put the Honkers back in front with two-run single; but their lead was short-lived. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Sanchez took the batters box with bases loaded and two away and launched his second home run of the game, a grand slam, to give the Blue Anchors an 8-2 lead.

The Honkers countered Alexandria’s seven-run fourth with three of their own in the fifth inning. A sacrifice fly to center off the bat of Parker Guinn (Washington) scored a run and a two-run single from Jordan Smith (Minnesota) got the Honkers back to a three-run deficit.

Alexandria added a ninth-run in the fifth, though, to get them to a 9-5 lead with just four innings left in their last game of the 2014 Northwoods League season.

That would be all for the runs scored in the game, however. Both teams’ bullpens ensured the score stayed intact, giving the Honkers a final record of 18-20 in the second half. For more information about the Rochester Honkers, visit rochesterhonkers.com.
