Demeter extends hit streak to eight, Yovan picks up win and save.

(Rochester, Minn.) – The future Honkers were back in action this week. Dustin Demeter and Hawaii played in the Dairy Queen Classic at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. Zach Stone and Brad Pluschkell’s UC Davis also took the trip north to face Kenyon Yovan and Morgan McCullough’s Oregon Ducks in Eugene. Here’s a recap of last week’s action.

 

Brad Pluschkell (INF) – UC-Davis (3-6)

Pluschkell and the UC Davis Aggies went on the road for five PAC-12 games this week. After a loss at Stanford, Brad collected two hits and a walk in three games at #7 Oregon State. Monday’s matchup against Oregon premiered four future Honkers. Zach Stone alongside Pluschkell for UC Davis against Morgan McCullough and Kenyon Yovan for the Ducks. Pluschkell started at second base for UC Davis, finishing the night 0-for-3. McCullough started at second base as well, finishing 0-for-4 with a walk. Oregon won the game 7-2. UC Davis heads home next for a game against Penn State and a three-game series against Connecticut.
 

Kenyon Yovan (RHP/INF) – Oregon (6-4)

Kenyon Yovan was called on to pitch in the ninth inning on Friday against Mississippi State. The Ducks were leading 1-0, after Oregon’s starter David Peterson went eight scoreless with 17 strikeouts. Yovan pitched a scoreless frame to pick up his third save of the season in three tries. He also picked up the win for Oregon in their 6-5 victory over the Bulldogs. He pitched three scoreless innings with six strikeouts and on only four hits. Kenyon is 1-0 with 6.0 innings pitched without giving up a run or a walk with ten strikeouts.
 

Ryan Dorney (RHP) – St. Martin’s (5-7)

Dorney made his third start of the season for he St. Martin’s Saints in game two on Saturday’s doubleheader against Central Washington. The Saints took game one 3-2, but failed to score a run in game two. Two St. Martin’s errors in the second inning led to five runs, but Dorney quickly recovered by retiring the next eight batters. Ryan went 4.2 innings while only allowing two earned runs and striking out four batters. He is 0-2 on the season with a 2.45 ERA and 10 strikeouts. St. Martin’s heads home for a four-game series against Montana State University Billings staring on Saturday.
 

Griffin Neuer (OF) – Bellarmine (7-5)

Bellarmine took two out three at home against Alderson Broaddus. Neuer started all three games at left field. In game one of Saturday’s doubleheader, Griffin went 1-1 with a single and two walks. He brought in two runs, leading the Knights to a 6-4 victory. Trailing 2-3 in Sunday’s game in the seventh inning, Neuer lead the charge with a leadoff single to left. He came into score the tying run (second of the game), leading to a 4-3 Bellarmine win. Griffin is third on the team in batting average (.375), second in hits (15), and first in total bases (21). Bellarmine hosts Tiffin University (OH) for a two-game set starting on Saturday.

 

Highlight Player of the Week

Dustin Demeter (INF) – Hawaii (6-5)

The Rainbow Warriors were in Minneapolis this weekend for the Daily Queen Classic. Dustin came in riding a four-game hitting streak. In Thursday’s 11-2 win over Minnesota, Demeter went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run (first of the season) in the 2nd inning and a two-run single in the ninth inning. He also scored twice in the game. He that followed up with a three-hit performance with an RBI in a 6-7 loss against Iowa. He added a hit in final two games, wins against Minnesota and Oral Roberts, extending his hitting streak to eight. Demeter is hitting .314 in 10 games with four runs and eight RBI. Hawaii hosts Sacred Heart for a four-game series starting on Thursday.
