Honkers Add Two Pitchers to Staff.
(Rochester Minn.) – The Rochester Honkers have announced the signings of Rigo Fernandez and Ray Diaz from Cal State Dominguez Hills for the 2018 season.
Fernandez, a left-handed pitcher from Beverly Hills, Calif. made his first start of the year this past weekend against 6th ranked California Baptist. The 170-pound junior tossed 4 1/3 innings and gave up four runs on four hits. Fernandez struck out eight to lead the Toros to a 5-4 win.
In his sophomore year, Fernandez made 17 appearances including four starts. He finished the year with a 6.46 ERA over 39 innings. He struck out 38. As a freshman he started two games making 18 appearances. At Beverly Hills High School, the 6-foot lefty was named All-Ocean League twice.
Diaz, a 6-foot-2, 230-pound junior right hander, has made one relief appearance on the early season, pitching 1.0 innings of relief and striking out 1 in a 15-4 loss versus California Baptist.
Diaz began his college career at Cal State Northridge. During his sophomore year at Northridge he made 24 appearances with five starts. He struck out 30 batters in 41 1/3 innings of work posting a 6.10 ERA. A Torrance, Calif. native, he attended Torrance High School, where he finished his senior season with a 1.69 ERA, and a 2.28 career ERA.
Dominguez Hills continues play Thursday, February 15th at Point Loma Nazarene for a three-game series versus the Sea Lions.
