Webb off to hot start at the plate for UC Riverside.

 

(Rochester Minn.) –  College baseball is officially underway and almost all of the future Honkers now have games under their belts. Here are some of the highlights from this past weekend.

Rigo Fernandez (LHP) – Cal State Dominguez Hills (3-3)

Rigo Fernandez impressed once again in his second outing of the season. The junior lefty started game one against Point Loma throwing six shutout innings. He struck out eight and surrendered just two hits to earn the win. Fernandez has thrown 10 2/3 innings this year striking out 6. He has a 1–0 record. Cal State Dominguez Hills won two out of three games against Point Loma. Dominguez Hills begins a four game series with UC San Diego Thursday.

Logan Denholm (C) – UC Davis (2-2)

Logan Denholm started two games this weekend against Cal State Bakersfield and started Monday against Stanford. The junior catcher was a big run producer for the Aggies. Denholm drove in four runs over three games. He had three hits in 11 at-bats. Denholm also came around to score four times. UC Davis took two out of three games from Cal State Bakersfield and lost to Stanford. UC Davis has a three game series with Creighton starting Friday.

Andy Armstrong (INF) – Oregon State (4-0)

Sophomore Andy Armstrong started a game at third and a game at second for the Beavers. Armstrong had nine at-bats and two hits over the weekend. He drove in three runs as Oregon State finished a dominant 4-0 weekend. The Beavers had victories over New Mexico twice, Cal Poly and Gonzaga. Oregon State will be participating in the Pac-12 Spring Training College Baseball Challenge next weekend. They have games scheduled against Ohio State and Nebraska.

Ryan Dorney (RHP) – St. Martin’s University (1-7)

Ryan Dorney started the final game of the weekend against Hawaii Pacific. The junior spun a gem striking out nine over five innings. He surrendered five hits and gave up no runs. He did not get a lot of offensive support as St. Martin’s lost 1-0. St. Martin’s is back in action March 3 against Western Oregon University.

 

Pete’s Pick of The Week

Nathan Webb (INF) – UC Riverside (2-2)

Freshman Nathan Webb started three games at third base and showed off some power over the weekend for the Highlanders. Over the course of 11 at-bats Webb had four hits including three doubles. He had one RBI and scored a run. UC Riverside split a two game series with Nebraska and Washington State. Next Weekend, UC Riverside heads up to Seattle for a four game series against Washington.
