Sems Has Huge Weekend for Kansas.
(Rochester Minn.) – Future Honkers are preparing for the core of their seasons as we move towards the midway point. Here are some highlights from the past week.
Rigo Fernandez (LHP) – Cal State Dominguez Hills (5-9)
Rigo Fernandez has established himself as an ace at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Fernandez improved to 2-0 leading Dominguez Hills to a 17-11 win over Cal State San Marcos. Fernandez struck out nine batters over five innings giving up just two runs. Fernandez has proved to be a strike out artist this season striking out 34 batters over 20 1/3 innings. Fernandez owns a 3.10 ERA. The Toros went 1-3 over the weekend dropping their record to 5-9. Cal State Dominguez Hills will host Cal State San Bernardino for a two-game series on Thursday. Then it’s off to San Bernardino for a four-game series beginning on Saturday.
Eddie Mathis (LHP) – Bellarmine (6-3)
Eddie Mathis gave Bellarmine a quality start to begin their four-game series against Hillsdale. The junior tossed seven strong innings giving up just one run on six hits. He struck out eight and earned his first win of the season. Mathis has thrown 13 2/3 innings, striking out 13. He has a 1-1 record with a 4.61 ERA. Bellarmine begins a two-game series against Lee University today.
Ray Soderman (C) – Oregon (8-3)
Ray Soderman enjoyed a solid weekend as the Ducks won three out of four against Florida Atlantic. Soderman hit .333 scoring two runs and driving in two. In the second game of the series, the junior had a three hit game with a double. Oregon hosts UC Davis this Thursday where Soderman will face another future Honkers catcher Logan Denholm.
Joshua Ibarra (RHP) – Concordia Irvine (5-13)
Josh Ibarra picked up his first collegiate win on March 2 against Academy of Art University. The freshman spun 6 1/3 innings allowing two runs on six hits and struck out four to improve to 1-2. Concordia Irvine split the series with Academy of Art University. Ibarra has thrown 23 1/3 innings to go along with 18 strike outs and a 6.17 ERA. Concorida Irvine hosts Holy Names University for a four-game series starting Thursday.

Benjamin Sems (INF) – Kansas (8-3)
Benjamin Sems swung a hot bat for the Jayhawks this weekend. He hit .500 and drove in six runs while starting every game at shortstop. In the last game of the series against Texas Southern, Sems went 3-for-4 with a triple and drove in five runs. He also had a double and scored two runs as Kansas swept Texas Southern. To go along with a .342 on-base percentage, Sems is hitting .314 and has 7 RBIs. Kansas plays Florida State today and hosts St. Johns for a three-game series beginning Friday.
