Rochester, Minn. – The Fond du Lac Dock Spiders captured their first ever Northwoods League Title with a 4-3 win over the Duluth Huskies in Game Three of the 2018 Summer Collegiate World Series. Dating back to 2000 the Dock Spiders are the only NWL team to win the title in their second year of play.
Fond du Lac was led by their pitching once again which started with their starting pitcher Peyton Sanderlin (Christian Brothers). Sanderlin went 5.2 innings, allowing three runs and striking out five.
Fond du Lac would go up 1-0 in the 4th when Cole Zabowski (Ole Miss) drove home a runner from second with a base hit into right field. Zabowski finished the postseason 9 for 24 with three doubles, and six RBI.
Duluth would battle back quickly when Chris Gilbody (Georgetown College) brought in both Nicholas Sogard (Loyola-Marymount) and Carlos Moseley (Cumberland) to give the Huskies the 2-1 advantage after four innings.
After Alex Henwood (Nebraska) led things off in the 6th with his first single on the night he would move over to third on a Cole Zabowski double two batters later. Henwood would come into score on a sacrifice fly from Andrew Bullock (Western Carolina) tying the ball game at two. After a costly Fond du Lac error in the bottom of the inning with two outs, the Huskies capitalized when Sean Watkins (Cal-State Los Angeles) hit a sharp single back up the middle that scored Carlos Mosely and the Huskies regained the lead at 3-2 after six innings.
Henwood would prove to be the hero for Fondy in the 7th when he sent home two runs with his second hit of the ball game giving the Dock Spiders a 4-3 lead.
Fond du Lac was able to get out of the 8th inning with the Huskies leaving the bases loaded. Michael Hope (Shippensburg) would pick up the save throwing the final 1.2 innings with one strikeout.
The Fond du Lac Dock Spiders finished the season 43-31 and will be taking the Northwoods League Championship trophy home to the Fondy Faithful.
