The Northwoods League’s top pitching staff held the Rochester bats down for a second straight night, leading the Rox to a 6-2 win. The Honkers mustered just four hits in the defeat.
The Rox jumped out to a four-run lead after five innings thanks to runs in three straight frames. They scored twice in third, helped by a couple of Rochester errors and a pair of singles. St. Cloud extended the lead with run-scoring doubles in back-to-back innings by Andrew Pinckney (Alabama) and Jordan Barth. (Augustana)
Rochester cut into the deficit in the fifth, Carson Stevens (Cal Poly) blasted his second home run of the summer against his former team.
The Honkers pulled within two in the seventh inning, Otto Grimm (Minnesota) delivered a two-out RBI single to score Zach Cole. (Ball St)
Rochester could not draw any closer with the Rox adding a pair of runs in the ninth.
The Honkers kept the ballgame close with quality pitching, Shane Martin (Northwest Nazarene) allowed just one earned run in four innings.
With the loss, Rochester falls to 26-29 and 11-12 in the first half. They open a two-game set with the Duluth Huskies tomorrow night at 6:35 from Mayo Field.
