ROCHESTER, MINN – The Rochester Honkers finished off a two game sweep over the Waterloo Bucks, defeating Waterloo 11-2 on Friday night at Mayo Field.
Once again, the Honkers scored early and often. They took a 2-0 lead in the second on a two run single from Alex Ritzer (UNC). Rochester added three more in the third thanks to an error, bases loaded walk and RBI fielders choice off the bat of Carson Stevens (Cal Poly).
Jacob Smith (University of Tennessee at Martin) made his first start as a Honker tonight and was fantastic in his five innings. The 6’7” southpaw only allowed one hit and struck out three. The lone blemish on his line was a Shaydon Kubo (Northern Colorado) RBI single in the fifth.
The Honkers pulled away after Kubo’s single. They put up three more in the bottom of the fifth to make it 8-1. Two coming on another two run single from Alex Ritzer. Rochester extended their lead with another three spot in the seventh, taking a 11-2 advantage, which wound up being the final score.
The Honkers sweep the two game series from the Bucks and improve to 5-3 in the second half. They’ll travel to St. Cloud on Saturday to start a two game series against the Rox. Noah Rooney (Minnesota) gets the ball. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m.
