ROCHESTER, MN – The Rochester Honkers blasted four home runs in a 13-5 victory over the Eau Claire Express on Sunday night at Mayo Field.
Eau Claire took an early lead against Honkers starter Noah Rooney (Minnesota). Trevor Haskins (Stanford) made it 1-0 with an RBI single in the first. The Honkers took the lead for good in the second. Four consecutive Honkers recorded hits with two outs as Jakob Guardado (Pasadena City) tied the game with an RBI single and Theo Hardy (San Jose State) gave Rochester the lead with a two run single.
The Express got a run back in the third on an Cadyn Schwabe (North Dakota State University) RBI single but the Honkers scored the next five to take an 8-2 lead. Will Asby (Sac City) made it 5-2 in the bottom of the third with his fourth home run of the summer, a two run shot. They added three more in the fourth, two coming on a Carson Stevens (Cal Poly) two run single.
The Express scored the next three runs to pull within three. They put up two runs in the fifth on another Trevor Haskins RBI single and a wild pitch. In the sixth they added another thanks to a Charlie Szykowny (Wisconsin, Stout) RBI single.
Rochester flexed their muscles to widen their lead and put the game away. In the bottom of the sixth Carson Stevens blasted a solo home run, his first of the summer. In the eighth it was Stevens again, hitting his second home run of the game, a two run dinger to make it 11-5 Rochester. Later in the inning Michael Brown (Washington) joined the home run party with another two run home run. This one went over the scoreboard in right center field, a monumental blast, putting the capper on a 13-5 Honkers victory.
With the win the Honkers improve to 8-6 in the second half but remain three games behind the Willmar Stingers for first place. Rochester starts a series against Willmar on Monday night at Bill Taunton Stadium. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
