Spencer throws complete game gem.  

 (Rochester Minn.) – Many future Honkers have started to heat up right in time for conference play. Here are some highlights from the past week.

Michael Michalak (INF) – Illinois (11-5)
Michael Michalak started all three games at the DH spot as the Fighting Illini took two out of three games from Southern Illinois. The Rochester native hit .400 in the series scoring four runs and driving in a run. Michalak is batting .428, has three doubles and has scored five runs this spring. Illinois hosts Cal State Northridge on Wednesday then it’s off to Evanston to play their first Big Ten series against Northwestern.

Eddie Mathis (LHP) – Bellarmine (12-6)
 Eddie Mathis is really putting it together for Bellarmine. He spun six shutout innings surrendering just four hits and striking out nine as Bellarmine beat Maryville 14-6. Mathis has now earned the win in three straight starts. The left-hander has a stellar 2.51 ERA and leads the Knights in strikeouts with 32. Bellarmine continues play Saturday hosting McKendree University for a four-game series.

Preston Jones (OF) – Oregon State (18-1)
Preston Jones had a solid week for the No. 1 team in the country. Jones went 4-for-12 as the Beavers swept California to win their fifth straight game. The sophomore also added an RBI double and a stolen base to the stat sheet. Jones is batting .364 and has scored three runs this season. Oregon State continues Pac-12 play hosting Washington on Friday.

David Lemasters (RHP) – Lake Erie (5-9)
David Lemasters picked up his second win of the season as Lake Erie held off Cedarville 4-3. Lemasters got in to a groove striking out nine and giving up just three hits. Lemasters gave up two runs in seven innings to improve his season ERA to 3.18. He has struck out 33 over 22 2/3 innings of work to go along with a 2-1 record. Lake Erie continues play Saturday at Alderson Broaddus.

Alex Baeza (INF) – Hawaii (10-6)
Alex Baeza had just one at-bat in the series against Illinois State but he made the most of it. He came up to the plate with the bases-loaded, down by three in the bottom of the ninth. He roped a double to left-center to clear the bases and give the Rainbow Warriors a walk-off win. Hawaii managed to sweep Illinois State and will look to continue that trend when they host Seton Hall Friday.

Pete’s Pick of The Week

Hunter Spencer (LHP) – Bellarmine (12-6)
Hunter Spencer tossed his first complete game of the year and led Bellarmine to a 3-2 win over Missouri-St. Louis. Spencer allowed just one earned run and struck out six for the Knights. Spencer has a 3-0 record to go along with a 2.93 ERA. He has recorded 29 strike outs, compared to four walks, over 30 2/3 innings. Bellarmine will host McKendree University Saturday for a four-game series.
