(Rochester, Minn)—The Rochester Honkers started the second half of the 2015 season in winning fashion, topping the Battle Creek Bombers 4-2 at Mayo Field on Wednesday night. Jayson Yano (Stevens Institute) earned his team leading fifth win for Rochester, while the Jake Sparger (Louisville) picked up his first save of the season. Cameron Ming (Arizona) was charged with the loss for Battle Creek.
Ryan Webberley (Cal Poly Pomona) was solid for the Honkers at the plate, going 2-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored.
Webberley scored unearned on a fielder’s choice in the first inning to give the Honkers a 1-0 lead. He scored again in the third on a RBI double from Cole Krzmarzick (Nevada) to put the honkers up 2-0.
Battle Creek scored in the fourth and fifth to tie the game at 2-all, but Rochester got back on top in short order as Miles Mastrobuoni (College of San Mateo) scored on Joe DeRoche-Duffin’s(UCONN) RBI single in the bottom of the fifth.
Slade Heggen (Oregon) scored an Insurance run for the Honkers in the fifth, and that proved to be enough as Sparger threw three scoreless innings to earn his save and give the Honkers the 4-2 win.
The Honkers and Bombers will face off again tomorrow, July 2nd, at 7 p.m. at Mayo Field. That will be the American Dairy Association Night with 97.5 Pulse FM, featuring the 21st Annual Cow Milking Contest. It wall also be a Novo Nordisk Homerun for Life Thursday.
