(Rochester, Minn.) – The Rochester Honkers (8-9 Second Half, 24-28 Overall) lost to the La Crosse Loggers (8-12, 22-32) by a score of 7-0 in game one of a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Mayo Field. The two teams will play the second game in La Crosse Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Morgan McCullough (Oregon) collected two hits for the third time in his last five games.
La Crosse took an early lead in the top of the first inning. Garrett Christman (Butler) singled with two outs and two runners on base, which scored Kenny Taylor (Duke) from third base.
Four runs scored on three hits for the Loggers in the top of the fourth inning, including a three-run double to right field by Jake Hirabayashi (UCLA).
Honkers third baseman Michael Michalak (Des Moines Area CC) made a heads-up play with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning, snagging a line drive hit by Jorge Guiterrez (Texas A&M) for the final out of the inning.
Leading by six runs in the top of the ninth inning, Dashon Moore (Southern Suburban) capped off the day with a solo home run to left field.
The Honkers bullpen, consisting of Ryan Dorney (St. Martin’s) and Weston Hatten (Nevada), pitched the final three innings for the Honkers. Hatten struck out two batters with surrendering a walk in two innings.
Ryan Anderson (Nevada) earned the win (2-0) for the Loggers. He pitched seven scoreless innings, giving up three hits while striking out four batters and walking three.
Ryan Thompson (Illinois) took the loss (1-4) for the Honkers. He pitched six innings, giving up four earned runs on eight hits while striking out four batters and walking three.
The Honkers will play the second game of the doubleheader Wednesday night in La Crosse. First pitch from Copeland Park is 7:05 p.m. Manny Armendariz (Doane) is scheduled to pitch for the Honkers. Armendariz is 3-0 with a 2.60 ERA. Mason McMahon (UW-La Crosse) is scheduled to pitch for the Loggers. McMahon is 1-2 this season with a 7.06 ERA.
The next home game for the Flock is Sunday, July 30, against the La Crosse Loggers. It will be Dash for Cash Day, presented by Country Financial. One lucky registered fan will be selected to win up to $1,000 on the field. The contestant will have 30 seconds to pick up money, located 45 feet away, using a snow shovel. The contestant will have to place the money in their container to win. It will also be Bob & Steve’s Corn Sunday on the Sports Deck and Slider’s Kids Club Day. Kids eat for free on the Sports Deck and can run the bases after the game.Gates open at noon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
