CATCHING UP WITH FORMER BUCK . . . JIM MAGRANE
This week we are catching up with former Waterloo Bucks pitcher Jim Magrane. The New York Mets drafted the Ottumwa, Iowa native in the 33rd round of the 1996 amateur entry draft. Since being drafted, Magrane has spent his entire career pitching in the minors, spending most of his time within the Tampa Bay Rays Double-A and Triple-A organizations. Magrane has also had brief stints with the Washington National’s Double-A and Triple-A squads and in the Independent Atlantic League. He is currently pitching for the Algodoneros de Guasave of the Winter Liga Mexicana del Pacifico.
Magrane has spent 8 seasons as a minor league pitcher, including 6 at the Triple-A level. Throughout his career, Magrane has appeared in 259 games, starting in 218 of them. He has accumulated a career earned run average of 4.06, struck out 916 batters, and pitched five complete games.
Currently, Magrane is serving the Guasave as a starting pitcher. So far this season, he has pitched in five games, sporting a record of two wins and one lose. Magrane has been effective in all five of his starts, sporting a dazzling 2.76 earned run average and striking out 22 batters.
Magrane was a member of the Waterloo Bucks from 1997 to 1999. He pitched in 53 games for the Bucks, 24 of which he was the starter. Magrane was very successful during his career with the Bucks, as he holds many of the organization’s pitching records. His records include complete games in a season (6), strikeouts in a season (134), career wins (20), career complete games (9), career innings pitched (232), and career strikeouts (245). Magrane was inducted into the Waterloo Bucks Hall of Fame in 2008.
