With all eyes on first place, but Waterloo Bucks (13-11) forgot about the competition behind them in the standings. One of those teams, the Green Bay Bullfrogs (13-10) took advantage of this opportunity, ambushing the Bucks by a score of 8-3 in Green Bay, sending the Bucks tumbling to fourth rather than rising to first in the South Division.
Waterloo’s starting pitcher Jared Wagoner (3-2) had his hands full with the combustible Green Bay offense. Wagoner gave up five runs on seven hits in his five innings on the hill on the way to his second loss of the season. Wagoner did manage to record five strikeouts, but it wasn’t enough to slow down the Bullfrogs. The Bucks also got innings from reserve pitchers Will Strack and Billy Barrett (1-0), but neither pitcher could stop the Bullfrogs from scoring. Green Bay’s starting pitcher Owen Jones (2-2) earned the win after striking out four and holding the Bucks to only three runs in his five innings on the mound.
The Bucks lost the battle of efficiency on offense. Waterloo recorded nine hits, only one less than Green Bay’s ten, but failed to bring base runners home and put up enough points. Seven Bucks recorded hits in the game, including two hits by both 3B Zach McCool and 1B Ryan Rieger. Waterloo also got two RBIs from RF Phil Keppler (pictured) and one RBI from LF Pat Stover, but they simply couldn’t match the pace set by the Bullfrogs.
The Bucks will get one more shot at the Bullfrogs this afternoon at 1:05 P.M. at Joannes Stadium in Green Bay. Corey Witkowski (2-1) is set to make the start for the Bucks at pitcher and will take on Green Bay’s starting pitcher Brad Schreiber (0-2). With the end of the first half of the season looming, the Bucks need a win tonight to begin their climb into first place.
