Catching up With Former Waterloo Buck Joey Baker.

Joey Baker is a former Starting Pitcher for the Waterloo Bucks.  Joey was raised in La Jolla, California and played for San Jose State University.  Joey was a tall figure on the mound standing 6’5" and weighing in at 200lbs.

During his time with the Bucks, Joey had played 14 games and finished with a 6-3 record.  In the 87.2 innings he had pitched, he had a 3.18 ERA, with 67 strike outs and 35 walks.

After graduating from San Jose State University, Joey was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 2000 draft (16th round, #464 overall).  Joey’s time with the Royals was short lived though– he was released in 2002 after posting an 11-14 record in the first two seasons.

Joey didn’t give up, he joined an independent league and played for the Brockton Rox based out of Brockton, MA.  In his first season with the Rox, Joey had a 9-6 record and a 4.36 ERA with 130 innings pitched in 20 games.  He had a career high 85 strike outs with 22 walks.

After not playing in the 2004 and most of 2005 season due to an injury, Joey struggled to get his career back on track.  Joey went 2-5 in 18 games with a 4.41 ERA the first full year after his injury, and decided to hang up the cleats.

Joey Baker will always be recognized as a Waterloo Buck– and we wish him all the best in his future endeavours.
