Every Wednesday we here at the Waterloo Bucks like to catch up with a former player. This week, we would like to highlight Zach Dillon. Zach was born in Des Moines, Iowa and played high school ball at Dowling High School in West Des Moines. After sticking around Iowa, Zach desided to go to Baylor University in Waco, Texas where he played for four years. During 2002, Zach played for the Waterloo Bucks and was primarily a Catcher. At 5’10" and 210lbs, Zach makes his presence known at the plate whether it be in the batters box, or behind it. Oddly enough, Zach hits left handed and throws right handed as well.
During the 2002 season, Zach played in 60 games for the Bucks. At the plate he had a .213 batting average in 183 at bats with 39 hits, 9 doubles, 0 home runs, 18 runs batted in, 28 strike outs, 27 walks, and 5 stolen bases.
After his time with the Bucks, Zach was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles of the 2006 Amateur Draft (20th round, # 595). He played 54 games for the Delmarva Shorebirds (A) in his later part of the 2006 Season. In his only full season in the minors, Zach played 92 for the Frederick Keys (A). In 2008, Zach played for a couple teams…including the GCL Orioles, Frederick Keys, and the Bowie Baysox (32 games total).
Overall in the minors, he had a .266 batting average in 665 total at bats with 204 hits, 42 doubles, 2 triples, 9 home runs, 124 runs batted in, 70 strike outs, 115 walks, and 5 stolen bases. After the 2008 season, Zach decided to hang up the glove and call it a career.
Even though he decided to call it a career, he didn’t get too far from baseball. Today, Zach is an Assistant Coach for the University of Iowa’s baseball club in his second season with the team. So far, Iowa is 4-8 on the season.
We wish Zach Dillon and the University of Iowa the best as they continue their season through the warmer months.
