WATERLOO, Iowa – Marking their first win streak in two weeks, the Waterloo Bucks (21-21/3-3) held on to defeat the Willmar Stinger (27-13/4-2), 2-1, Monday night at Riverfront Stadium. In a battle of Florida Gulf Coast hurlers, Jordan Desguin (2-2) bested collegiate teammate Garrett Anderson (2-1), surrendering one run on four base-hits over seven innings of work in the win.

Tyler Selesky (Florida Gulf Coast) finished the night with three doubles, a run scored and an RBI to lead the offense while Nathan Spielvogel (Marrimack) took home the save with two innings of scoreless relief from the bullpen. The win provided the Bucks with their first two-game winning streak since June 22 and evened both their overall and second half records at .500.

The Stingers struck first in the game, going up, 1-0, on an RBI-grounder from Ky Parrott (James Madison) to shortstop. The ball, nearly fielded as a double play, brought Sean Beesley (Illinois St.) in for the lone Willmar run on the night.

Jordan Desguin (2-2) escaped a tough jam with two runners on in scoring position in the top of the fourth by striking out Justin Thaxton (Pacific). The starter finished the night after seven innings of one-run ball where he struck out five and walked one.

Taylor Boyd (St. Joseph’s) legged out an infield single to begin a Waterloo scoring chance in the bottom of fifth. After two doubles in his first two at-bats, Selesky sent another to the alley in right to score Boyd and tie the game, 1-1, with one out in the fifth.

Two batters later, following a Zach McKinstry (Central Michigan) sacrifice bunt, Zach Soria (Florida International) plated Selesky with a sharp ground ball to shortstop. Waterloo would maintain the 2-1 advantage the rest of the way.

Nathan Spielvogel took over right where the starter left off, shutting down the Willmar bats for just one hit over the course of two shutout innings. The reliever took the save, his second of the year, after preserving and securing the 2-1 victory. The Stingers failed to get a runner in scoring position following the fourth inning.

The Bucks hit the road next for a two-game series in Duluth, starting Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. from Wade Stadium. Waterloo returns home to host Alexandria and begin a six-game home stand on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Thursday marks Pro Wrestling Night where Kevin “Big Sexy” Nash will make an appearance.
