Waterloo, IA – The Waterloo Bucks (2–3) won a thrilling series opener against the Thunder Bay Border Cats, 16–14. The game marks 162 career wins as the manager of the Bucks for Darrell Handelsman, making him the new winningest manager in the history of the organization.
Handelsman, who returned to the Bucks this season after serving as their manager from 1999 to 2002, didn’t collect No. 162 easily tonight as Bucks and Border Cats swapped the lead six times before the home team took it for good in the bottom of the eighth.
Every Bucks player in the starting lineup recorded at least one base hit save for infielder Marcus Heusohn, who still managed to get aboard with a walk and come around to score.
Outfielder Michael Lippe led the Bucks offense, going 3-for-6 and recording four RBIs. Fellow outfielder Cole Hill also impressed in just his second start in left field with three RBIs of his own.
The Bucks will go for the series sweep over the Border Cats tomorrow. That game is slated to start 6:35 p.m.
