Waterloo, IA – The Waterloo Bucks won their fifth straight game to advance to a Northwoods League-best 7-1 record on the season after a 6-5 triumph over the Rochester Honkers at Riverfront Stadium on Monday, June 2.
First baseman Marcus Heusohn played hero for the Bucks, roping a single into right field to drive in backstop Luca Perriello and put Waterloo ahead 6-5 with two outs in the bottom of the eighth. Perriello, who initially got himself into scoring position by leading off the frame with a double, was the last man to score for the remainder of the contest.
Waterloo received its second quality start of the season from left-handed arm Parker Sweeney as the Virginia Tech southpaw pitched six innings, allowing just three hits, three walks and one earned run en route to striking out two.
The Bucks manufactured runs consistently throughout the contest, scoring at least once in five of their eight offensive innings. Heusohn and left fielder Ethan Rossi both drove in two runs, and shortstop Will Johnson and right fielder Jake Bechtel each knocked in one. These same four Waterloo bats notched two hits apiece.
New addition Nakni Anna locked down the save with a clean one-two-three ninth inning. Fellow lefty reliever Kole Bradley got the Bucks out of the top of the eighth inning with the score even at five by recording the third out of the frame.
Johnson led all Bucks with two runs, and second baseman Caleb Parker finished the contest with a team-high two steals.
Trailing 1-0 after the first half-inning, Waterloo earned its fourth come-from-behind victory of the year and advanced to 2-0 in one-run finishes.
The Bucks take on the Honkers again at Riverfront Stadium tomorrow at 6:35 pm (CDT).
