La Crosse, WI – The Waterloo Bucks lost game one of a doubleheader at Copeland Park on Tuesday, July 8, as the Loggers outlasted the Bucks 18-9.

After trailing 10-2 at the end of the sixth inning, the Bucks came to bat in the seventh with a vengeance. Following four runs put up on the board that frame, Owen Ross stepped up to the plate for the second time in the inning, having begun the rally with a single to left. With the bases load and two outs, he sent a ball deep into the corner in left field, clearing the bases and pulling the Bucks within one. They would not score again for the remainder of the game.

Although the seven run seventh gave Waterloo the largest inning of the day for either side, the Loggers went on to score eight unanswered runs and put the score out of reach. La Crosse capitalized on the 11 walks and five hit-by-pitches Bucks pitchers surrendered throughout the course of the game to score the most runs any team has posted in a single contest against Waterloo this season.

Cole Smith hit first career home run as a member of the Northwoods League with a two-run blast in the fifth to open the scoring for the Bucks. Gannon Wentz doubled home a pair in the seventh for his first NWL hit and his first NWL runs driven in, paving the way for Ross’ pivotal hit a couple batters later.

Slapping a single into center to start the second, Larry Edwards earned his 99th career Northwoods League hit.

Game two of the doubleheader begins tonight at 6:35 pm (CDT) at Copeland Park.
