Waterloo, IA – The Iowa Sweet Corn suffered their third straight defeat on Friday, July 11, with a 6-1 loss to the St. Cloud Rox at Riverfront Stadium.

For the second day in a row, Iowa struck first by scoring the game’s first run to take an early lead. After reaching on a walk to start the bottom of the third, Owen Ross sprinted home on a passed ball to cross the plate and give the Sweet Corn a 1-0 advantage.

However, Iowa did not maintain that lead for long. The following half inning, St. Cloud responded with two runs to take the lead for good. With six innings of work and only two earned runs allowed, Eli Pillsbury delivered the tenth quality start of the season for Iowa, punching out six in the process while walking only three.

The Sweet Corn tallied just three hits on the day. Iowa’s only extra-base hit of the contest came on a double from Ross with one out in the seventh. The McNeese State University duo of Marcus Heusohn and Larry Edwards notched the only other two knocks as Edwards reached base safely a game-high four times with three walks.

In his Northwoods League debut, Patrick Mendiola drew two base on balls. Ross and Caleb Parker worked the only other two walks for the Sweet Corn. Iowa has now failed to drive in a run in 17 consecutive offensive innings.

Tomorrow, Saturday, July 12, the Waterloo Bucks welcome the Duluth Huskies into Riverfront Stadium for the second time this year to commence the final series before the All-Star break. First pitch of game one is slated for 6:35 pm (CDT).
