Waterloo, IA – On Monday, Aug. 4, the Waterloo Bucks shocked the Eau Claire Express with a 3-2 comeback victory at Riverfront Stadium.
With the Bucks down 2-1 and two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Cole Smith raced home on a wild pitch to tie the game. Meanwhile, Jimmy Nugent — the runner on first — rounded second and sprinted in safely to third. Edging closer on the previous play, Nugent scored the go-ahead run on the next pitch that also went to the backstop. The run ended the scoring for the evening.
Gannon Wentz earned his fourth victory in his eighth Northwoods League game, hurling three innings without allowing a baserunner. Brady Baur delivered 1.1 IP while recording a strikeout and allowing no runs.
Nugent picked up the lone RBI of the day for Waterloo on a single that got the Bucks on the board in the eighth. The production in the three-run frame commenced on a Marcus Heusohn walk with two outs. Mitchell Iliff, Nugent and Heusohn were the only Bucks to reach base multiple times.
Unable to get aboard in four trips to the plate, Larry Edwards’ on-base streak of 27 came to an end. While it was still intact, it was the longest active streak in the Northwoods League. No Waterloo Buck has posted a longer stretch in that category for the entire season. His hitting streak of ten also came to a close.
The Bucks look to finish off the sweep over the Express tomorrow, Tuesday, Aug. 5, at 6:35 pm (CDT) at Riverfront Stadium.
