Waterloo Bucks (10-4) righthander Jordan Nelson retired fifteen of seventeen by firing 5.0 shutout innings of two-hit baseball with three strikeouts and zero walks as the Bucks became the Northwoods League’s first team to reach double-digit wins on Sunday evening, dispatching the Duluth Huskies (4-10) by a 5-2 final. Falling behind 2-0 early, the Bucks quickly responded to plate one in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the seventh.

Harrison Cook provided Waterloo with 4.0 innings of gutsy pitching, allowing just two runs on seven hits while striking out two and walking none to receive a no-decision as the Huskies ran up his pitch count early.

Trailing 2-0 in the fourth, Daniel Irisarri (1-for-4, R, HR, RBI) opened the home half with a solo blast to right field. Chris Seng (2-for-3, R) led off the fifth with a single and was moved to second by a Cameron Repetti (0-for-2, BB, R, SAC) sacrifice bunt. Garrett McGowan (1-for-3, HBP, R, ROE, SB) flied out to deep center and Seng tagged up from second, drawing an errant throw from the relay man to third that allowed the Bucks’ speedy centerfielder to scamper home and tie things at two.

Nelson entered in the fifth and retired the first nine men he faced. In the home half of the seventh, Carson Longstreth (1-for-3, R) and Seng rapped back-to-back singles followed by a Repetti walk to load the bases. McGowan grounded a ball to first that was booted, allowing him to reach safely and score Longstreth while Seng was hung up between home and third. Although Seng was tagged out, Repetti alertly raced to third. Max Jung-Goldberg (0-for-4, ROE, SB) sent another grounder to Duluth’s first baseman, and again he could not handle it as Repetti scored to make it 4-2. McGowan and Jung-Goldberg took off on a double-steal attempt, and the Huskies catcher threw down to no one in particular at second base as nobody covered, permitting McGowan to score the Bucks’ fifth and final run.

Nelson slammed the door and finished out the game with 5.0 scoreless, striking out three and walking none while scattering two hits to earn his second win of the summer.

The Bucks head to St. Cloud on Monday, June 14 for a two-game road series beginning at 7:05 p.m.
