Rochester, MN – The Waterloo Bucks (29–26) split their doubleheader against the Rochester Honkers (28–27) on Wednesday, losing their first game by eleven runs before coming back to win the second game, 6–4.
The Bucks kept things close for the first three innings of game one, but the Honkers exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the fourth to give themselves a very comfortable 12-run advantage.
Game two was much tighter as the Honkers jumped out to another early lead, but the Bucks would put up a five-run frame in the fourth, highlighted by a three-run home run from infielder Elliot Good. That inning gave the Bucks a lead they would never relinquish.
The Bucks also received a solid start from pitcher Seth White, who gave up just four earned runs across 5.1 innings while striking out five batters. Relief pitcher Chaney Trout, one of the Bucks’ four all-stars this season, came out of the pen in the final inning to shut down the Honkers and claim his third save of the summer.
The Bucks are still just a game and a half behind the La Crosse Loggers for the second half lead, but will have an opportunity to gain some ground on Thursday as they start a two-game series against the Minnesota Mud Puppies. First pitch for that game is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
