Eau Claire, WI – The Eau Claire Express turned back the clock on Wednesday night, breaking out the throwback Eau Claire Bears uniforms that were worn by the likes of Henry Aaron back in the 1950s. Despite playing under a different name, it was the same Express team that we’ve seen thus far in the second half, taking home the victory over the Duluth Huskies 3-1.
It was a pitcher’s duel in this one as Eau Claire’s Alec Baker (Dallas Baptist) and Duluth’s Mason Burns (Western Kentucky) did not allow a run in their outings, going six and five innings respectively. Baker struck out nine strikeouts and allowed just three hits.
The Huskies finally broke the tie in the 7th when JD Rogers (Vanderbilt) scored on a double steal. Duluth wouldn’t hold the lead for long though as Cadyn Schwabe (North Dakota St.) blasted a three-run homer into right field to give Eau Claire the advantage in the bottom half. That would prove to be the only scoring in the game as Matt Helwig (Lewis) worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the 9th to give the Express the win and earn the save.
The Express are now 7-1 in the second half and 9-1 in their last ten games. They return back to Carson Park to take on the St. Cloud Rox for a two-game series to close out the homestand.
