Waterloo, IA – The Waterloo Bucks, a member of the Northwoods League, have announced the signing of right-handed pitcher Joel Alvira (pronounced joe-ELL al-VEE-ra) to their roster for the 2013 season.  Alvira, a sophomore at Alabama State University, is the 11th player to be named to Waterloo’s roster for the team’s 19th season.

Last year, Alvira started 13 games for the Hornets, finishing with a 4-5 record. The 6’0”, 237-pounder ended the season with a 3.86 ERA and 65 strikeouts in 77 innings pitched. A native of Fajardo, Puerto Rico, Alvira struck out 39 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play, finishing the conference season with a 3.42 ERA and a 4-2 record.

“Joel has an electric arm,” said Bucks general manager Dan Corbin. “He competes and if he shows up and takes his best shot, he’s got a chance to be real exciting.”

Born October 28, 1993, Alvira attended the International Baseball Academy where he had a 1.50 ERA and threw a no-hitter as a senior. Joel is the son of Joel Alvira and Margarite Velazga.
