Four games were postponed on Saturday night, as bad weather rolled through the Northwoods League. Tonight's games between Rochester and Willmar, Green Bay and Rockford as well as Kenosha and Wisconsin were postponed and will be made up in a doubleheader on Sunday with a pair of seven-inning matchups. The game between Lakeshore and Kalamazoo was suspended in the third inning and will be completed to nine innings on Sunday, followed by a seven-inning second game.
Battle Creek 8, Madison 5
The Battle Creek Bombers scored four runs in the first inning and led the rest of the way in an 8-5 victory over the Madison Mallards on Saturday night. Madison outhit Battle Creek 11-9 but recorded four errors that led to four unearned runs for the Bombers. Battle Creek's starting pitcher Cody Puckett (Middle Tennessee State) picked up the victory and threw 6 1/3 innings, allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits and one walk with eight strikeouts. Bombers' shorstop and leadoff hitter Daniel Patzlaff (Oregon) hit 3-for-5 at the plate with one run scored.
Eau Claire 8, La Crosse 2
The Eau Claire Express had a balanced performance of hitting and pitching in their 8-2 victory over the La Crosse Loggers on the road. Eau Claire starter Jon Roblez (Alabama St) threw six scoreless innings and allowed four hits and two walks with six strikeouts to pick up the victory. Eau Claire was outhit by La Crosse 8-7, and the Loggers left four more runners on base than the Express did. Express leftfielder Daulton Varsho (UW-Milwaukee) finished 3-for-5 at the plate with five RBI and a run scored with a three-run homer in the ninth to put the game away for Eau Claire.
Thunder Bay 2, Wisconsin Rapids 1
The Thunder Bay Border Cats walked off in the 10th inning in a 2-1 victory over the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters on Saturday night. The first six innings went by scoreless, and each team plated a run in the seventh inning. The game remained tied at one until the bottom of the 10th. With two outs, Thunder Bay's Michael Papierski (Louisiana State University) singled to score pinch-runner Jesse Lee (University of Rhode Island) from third base for the game-winning run. Border Cats' starter Gunnar Kay (Jefferson College) threw 8 1/3 scoreless innings and allowed one run on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts in a no decision.
Duluth 14, St. Cloud 7
The Duluth Huskies scored 10 unanswered runs in a 14-7 victory over the St. Cloud Rox on the road Saturday night. St. Cloud took an early 1-0 lead, and the game was tied at four in the fourth before the Huskies went on their big run. Duluth pounded out 15 hits in the game. Rightfielder Jake Pries (UCLA) finished 3-for-6 with four runs sccored and one RBI, including a home run. Second baseman Casey Moses (Texas Wesleyan) hit 3-for-6 with three RBI and a run scored in the victory for the Huskies.
Mankato 6, Waterloo 1
The Mankato MoonDogs pounded out 16 hits in a 6-1 victory over the Waterloo Bucks on the road Saturday night. Mankato held a 6-0 lead before Waterloo scored its lone run in the bottom of the ninth inning. The MoonDogs stranded 17 runners on base in the victory, and their designated hitter Jordan Washam (La Tech) finished 4-for-5 with one RBI and a run scored, including his second home run of the season. Chase Hamilton (Austin Peay) hit his eighth homer of the year for Mankato and hit 3-for-5 with one walk, two RBI and a run scored.
