The Northwoods League heads into the second week of the season with what  continues to be many tight and intense matchups between teams looking to tack on more wins as they head into the new week. Duluth upset the Bismarck Larks after losing three in a row to them, and the Huskies finally come out winning 7-6 to get their third win of the season. Nine teams in today’s contests split their two-game series.

Rockford 16, Kalamazoo 5

The Rockford Rivets even the series against the Kalamazoo Growlers after an explosive offense drove across 16 on thirteen to defeat the Growlers. The Rivets now have their fourth win of the season.

Khalil Walker (Eastern Arizona College) went 3-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Jack Sheri (Creighton), Nick Demarco (Notre Dame), Bradley White, and Noah Jouras each drove in two RBI on the day. Jouras (Triton) went 3-for-4 with one run as well while White (South Suburban College) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Michael Morse started the game throwing 4 innings – allowing 4 hits, 3 runs, 2, walks, and struck out two. Jack Wajda came in relief throwing 2.2 innings with 4 hits, 2, runs, 0 walks, and 0 strikeouts.

Bismarck 6, Duluth 7

The Duluth Huskies get their first win against the Bismarck Larks, 7-6. The Huskies had faced the Larks three times before, losing the first three in the series. They now have a 3-3 record.

Michael Hallquist (Minnesota – Crookston) and Lucas Kelly (Texas A&M) each had two RBI on the day. Hallquist went 1-for-3 at the plate with a home run and one run scored. Joshua Duarte (Georgetown College) went 2-for-3 with a walk and one run scored. Alex Potter got the start for the Huskies and threw 5 innings – gave up 10 hits, 6 runs, 1 walk, and two strikeouts.

Kenosha 2, Battle Creek 3

Battle Creek breaks their losing streak after defeating the Kenosha Kingfish this evening. They scored three runs on six hits which was just enough to shut the Kingfish down to win. The Battle Jacks now have their second win on the season.

Brock Daniels (Missouri) went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Coltrane Rubner (Davenport) went 1-for-4 with one RBI and one run. Hunter Varnadoe (Middle Georgia St University) got the start throwing 5.2 innings with three strikeouts. He gave up 3 hits, 2 runs, and four balls. The Battle Jacks had zero errors on defense.

Fond du Lac 7, Wausau 6

The Fond du Lac Dock Spiders respond with 7 runs on 9 hits after losing the first game to the Wausau Woodchucks in last night’s game. The Dock Spiders break the Woodchucks (W6) win streak and broke their losing streak (L5).

Jack Gorman (Presbyterian College) went 1-for-4 with 2 RBI. Paul Wittman (West Texas A&M) went 1-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored. Sebastian Guzman (Washington St)  started the game throwing 6 innings – giving up 7 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk, and 2 strikeouts.

Madison 1, Wisconsin 9

The Wisconsin Rapid Rafters split the series 1-1 against the Madison Mallards, defeating them 9-1 this evening. They reached their third win of the season and are now 3-5 to start.

Kyle Carlson (Piedmont) went 2-for-4 with a double and 3 RBI, leading the team this evening. Jack Basseer (Pepperdine) went 2-for-4 with one RBI and three runs scored. Levi Jensen (University of North Alabama) had two RBI on the night. Jacob Rosenkranz (Valparaiso University) got the start and threw 3 innings, allowed 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, and three strikeouts.

Traverse City 7, Kokomo 2

After dropping game one, the Traverse City Pit Spitters defeat the Kokomo Jackrabbits 7-2 this evening.  They scored 7 runs on eight hits and now have their sixth win to start week two of the season.

Three players in the Pit Spitters offense had a double tonight. Parker Brosius (Georgia Tech) went 3-for-4 with a double, one RBI and two runs scored. Tyler Minnick (Georgia Tech) led the team in RBI with two on the evening. Carson Fischer (Davenport) started the game and gets the win after throwing 6.2 innings, 6 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk, and seven strikeouts.

Willmar 12, Minot 0

Willmar takes the series after a shutout win against the Minot Hot Tots.  They scored 12 runs on fifteen hits today. Now the Stingers have their fifth win record and are now 5-1.

Kevin Fitzer (California St University Northridge) and Kristofer Hokenson (Minnesota) each had two RBI and one run scored. Kyle Payne (North Nazarene University) went 2-for-5 with two doubles and one run scored. Luke Williams (Alabama) went 2-for-4 with one RBI and three runs scored. Scott Anderson (Point Loma Nazarene) led the team in RBI with three on the night. Mitch Gutknecht (Minnesota St – Mankato) got the start and win after throwing 6 innings – giving up only 3 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, and nine strikeouts.

St. Cloud 5, Mankato 3

St.Cloud splits the series after defeating the Mankato MoonDogs 5-3 this evening. The Rox are now 6-2 on the season.

Ripken Reese (Kent St) went 3-for-4 with a double, getting his first hit of the season. He had one RBI on the night. Kyle Jackson (Kent St) went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Ryan Chmielewski (Southwest Minnesota St) got the start throwing 5 innings – allowing 6 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, and six strikeouts.

Green Bay 5, Lakeshore 4

Green Bay splits the series after defeating Lakeshore in a close contest, winning 5-4. The Rockers are now back in the win column and have a 5-3 record.

Cuyler Zukowski got the Rockers first hit of the night and Tommy Davis drove him in with a triple. Zukowski went 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Davis scored on a pass ball to score the games second run. Jackson Murphy got his first start on the mound throwing 3 innings – allowing 1 hit, 1 run, 5 walks, and one strikeout.

Waterloo 6, Eau Claire 5

Waterloo responds with a win and takes the series against the Eau Claire Express after their offense battled through a tight matchup. The Bucks are now 4-4 on the season.

Cole Hill went 3-for-4 with a walk and 2 RBI. He led off the four run innings with a single to the outfield, then scored on Greg Nichols single. Cortlan Castle, March Heusohn, Brandon Fish, and Ariv Camacho each went 1-for-4 on the evening. Fish and Castle each had an RBI. Kade Douglas gets the win after throwing 5.2 innings – allowing 8 hits, 4 runs, 1 walk, and two strikeouts. The Buck’s pitching staff combined for six strikeouts.

Rochester 17, La Crosse 5

The Rochester Honkers scored 17 runs on fifteen hits to secure the win against the La Crosse Loggers. They took the series 2-0 and are now 6-2 on the season.

Ben North (Creighton) had a productive day at the plate going 3-for-5 with a double, home run, and 5 RBI. Jared Davis (Arizona Western) also went 3-for-5 with a double and had 3 RBI and two runs scored. Griffen Sotomayor (Washington St) had 4 RBI on the night after going 1-for-5 with two runs scored. Kaden Wickersham (Hutchinson Community College) started the game throwing 3 innings – giving up 2 hits, 4 runs, w walks, and three strikeouts. Easton Richter (St. Louis) came in relief throwing 2 innings – giving up 0 hits, 1 run, 3 walks, and one strikeout.
